Project Title: Livelihood Enterprise Development Programme  (LEDP)

Supported by: NABARD, RO Agartala, Tripura

Project timeline: 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2024

Area of Implementation: Villages – Kamrangtali, Baniachara and Purba Chandigarh, Block-Mohonbhog, District-Sepahijala, Tripira

Specific Intervention: Income enhancement through intensive training on goat and pig rearing, hand-holding and extension services, convergence with Govt. Line departments, demonstration centre, exposure visit and SHG credit linkage

Objectives of the Project:

  • To identify suitable livelihood intervention through participatory approach based on local demand, availability of raw material, existing skill sets, traditional knowledge of community, transport facility, availability of infrastructure, marketing opportunities, access to various Govt. schemes on livestock development, etc. for SHG members / their family members.
  • To enhance the capacities of SHG members / their family members through identifying the skill gaps, appropriate skill up-gradation, demonstrations and development of livelihood activities in the locality.
  • To enhance the income levels of SHG members by improving/ acquiring of skills to take up livelihood activities with credit support of banks / CLF under TRLM.
  • To develop a shared vision of change, enhance capacity / knowledge of SHG members for managing their enterprise, business development and marketing
  • To provide mentoring services and handholding support for ensuring that trained SHG members establish their livelihood ventures successfully.
  • To facilitate collaboration with Resource Agencies for provision of Common infrastructure/ incidental services including establishing business tie-up arrangement.

Strategies adopted:

  • The programme was implemented by involving the women members of credit linked Self-Help Groups (SHGs) & thus inculcated a sense of ownership among them
  • The programme also involved various stakeholders, viz, Gram Panchayat, Banks, Livestock Department, Buyers, Govt. Farm and Tripura State Rural Livelihoods Mission
  • Development of Community Resource Persons to provide escort services to the animal farmers after completion of the project
  • Promotion of Demonstration Centre with all facilities for modern method of animal rearing
  • Community engagement meetings & partners’ meeting were regularly conducted to share the community views for better implementation of the programme.

Key Activities

  • Baseline survey covering 320 livestock farmers
  • farmers underwent 10-days intensive training on goat and pig rearing followed by 2-days refresher course on marketing linkage
  • Exposure visits planned at Debipur farm to gain practical knowledge on animal rearing
  • Two demonstration centre – one each on goat and pig
  • 36-SHGs got credit support from bank
  • Hand-holding and extension support continuing on modern livestock rearing including breeds selection, farm management, feeding, vaccination and diseases control, bio security and marketing tie up
  • Vaccination camp organised for free vaccination of animals
