SHGs in West Bengal

There are 5.86 lakhs SHGs with outstanding loan with different Banks in West Bengal. The outreach through this SHG Bank linkage system is tantamount to about 60 lakh HHs with total population of about 2.7 Crores.

In West Bengal, all efforts taken together have contributed significantly to create a positive and conducive environment where the potential of SHGs could be harnessed. The present scenario, on one hand, not only gives enormous opportunities for the SHGs to play important roles in development, but on the other hand, has also thrown many challenges before all concerned limiting the expected results.

In West Bengal, the majority of SHGs are supported under the “Anandadhara” programme, being implemented by West Bengal State Rural Livelihood Mission under the Panchayat & Rural Development Department as a part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (restructured version of the erstwhile SGSY). There are off course a number of State government departments and agencies promoting and nurturing SHGs. Additionally, there are a number of groups formed under NABARD’s SHG-Bank linkage programme (SBLP).
